What is the difference between basic meditations, DIY shamanic journeys* and facilitated shamanic journeys*?
This is a high level introduction only.
Meditations are an outstanding practice that helps balance and calm the physical, mental, emotional and spirit. Mindfulness meditations help develop discipline and allow the development and processing of whatever is in environment and psyche, and importantly your relationship and response to all that. If you’re going deeper with mantra meditations, there can be specific developments you might pursue, but even deeper are the transcending meditations, which allow for profound endocrine balance, which can also be transformational with regards to perspective development, stress responses, and for some even release of basic household addictions like drinking, smoking and nail-biting, just as examples, and we have not sited health improvements that all these can support.
There are meditation teachers all around us, you just have to look. I’m a meditation teacher, however, I consciously choose not to teach, unless it’s just the right medicine.
DIY shamanic journeys* offer more than meditations in the sense that they are intentionally allowing spirit, mind, emotional and physical aspects to evolve, fuelled by the intention of the journey. Trance states allow for spirit to flow and interaction. This interaction allows for the mind-body and spirit aspects to move, negotiate, reveal themselves, and cognitively find resolution in an experiential and almost tangible format. Your experience will be as good as your ability, but even beginners get outstanding results if they can be patient enough to wait. (See dual states in journeying.) These journeys are generally more confronting than meditations because they are fuelled by an intention. Your spirit and psyche react to that intention and are fuelled to go!
Facilitated shamanic journeys* with an adept Shaman allows the Shaman to be used for this or that, communicated with, attacked, confronted, informed. Maybe all this is only safe in the space held by the shaman, not at home/work/friends or even a therapist. Ultimately these energies are not judged by the Shaman (well not too much) and are allowed/facilitated to have their movement, to do-their-bit, and evolve to some point of dignity. More difficult energies need removing but to a place/realm/energetic that best suits their nature and needs, always with dignity. But then you are brought to this “why did you engage with all that”? And all that needs to be addressed internally, acknowledged, supported and resolved. This is facilitated, provoked even, to allow more awakenings, self responsibilities and then we start to see innate energies starting to flow, and then healing will most often happen automatically. The human knows how to heal given the right conditions. Sometimes support is absolutely appropriate, for all people. (this is vastly simplified for the purposes of introduction only)
Each of the above practices has their place in creating wellness internally and for your community. Choosing the right one to support a meaningful and nourishing life will be different at different times of life. Follow your instinct and you should land in the right space! All are a part of a healthy thriving community!
